Authoritative review of theory, methods, and applications colloid science, extensively updated with new developments in the field

The Colloid Domain delivers a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of colloid science theory, methods, and applications, emphasizing the molecular interactions that determine the properties of colloidal systems and providing an authoritative account of critical developments in colloid science.

This new edition includes numerous updates such as scattering techniques and biological applications of colloids. This edition also adds new sections on biopolymers in colloids including proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides. It includes an updated and rewritten chapter on Colloidal Sols, a new section on lipid nanoparticles and mesoporous particles, and a more expansive discussion on aerosols.

Concept maps preceding each chapter put subject matter into perspective. Numerous worked examples illustrate key concepts and more than 250 high-quality illustrations help clarify processes described.

Written by a highly qualified author, The Colloid Domain includes discussion on:

Chemical potential as a central thermodynamic concept in the description of multicomponent systems
Surface chemistry and monolayers, covering capillary condensation, Ostwald ripening, and nucleation and particle adsorption
The use of angle-averaged potentials to evaluate electrostatic interactions and obtain free energy
Forces in colloidal systems, covering electrostatic double-layer forces, Van der Waals forces, and oscillatory forces
The DLVO theory as a basic framework for thinking about colloidal stability

The Colloid Domain is an indispensable resource for students and professionals in chemistry and chemical engineering working in an array of industries, including petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, agricultural, ceramic, coatings, forestry, and paper products.

Håkan Wennerström is an Emeritus Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, Lund University, Sweden. He is the author of more than 250 publications mainly in colloid science in the areas of surfactant and lipid phase behavior, surface forces, electrostatic interactions, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. He was a member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry for 14 years and its Chairman for three years.
