A comprehensive reference covering all aspects of Sclerotinia stem rot of crucifers including the latest molecular laboratory and field techniques, and newly emerging areas which are likely to have a bearing on its management.
The plant pathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum causes white stem rot of crucifers and is considered one of the most destructive and cosmopolitan of plant pathogens. It infects over 900 species of plants worldwide including important field crops, cash crops, vegetable crops, fruit crops, ornamental plants, trees, shrubs and numerous weeds. Sclerotinia is widely distributed throughout temperate regions but also occurs in more arid areas. A lack of adequate host genetic resistance, the wide host range of the pathogen, and the difficulty in managing the disease all contribute to Sclerotinia's extensive crop damage within both broad acre and horticultural crops. Recent advances in disease cycle, epidemiology and disease forecasting, pathogenic variability, host resistance including molecular and biometabolomics, and disease management strategies including biological control and latest molecular and field techniques to study Sclerotinia are included. Some newly emerging areas of Sclerotinia research which are likely to have a bearing on its management are also discussed. This second volume, Epidemiology and Disease Management, covers aspects of: · Perpetuation, disease cycle, epidemiology, and disease forecasting. · Pathogenic variability. · Genetics and sources of host-resistance. · Molecular mechanisms of host resistance. · Biometabolomic resistance and introgression of host resistance. · Disease management strategies. · Biological control. · Protocols to study Sclerotinia. . Future research priorities of Sclerotinia on epidemiology and disease management.

Govind Singh Saharan (Author) Dr. Govind Singh Saharan is former Professor and Head, Department of Plant Pathology, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India. Dr Saharan has conducted research in diverse fields of plant pathology and has published 250 journal articles. He has edited and written several books and chapters and contributed to the Crop Production Compendium (CABI). Naresh Kumar Mehta (Author) Dr. Naresh Kumar Mehta is former Associate Dean, Professor, and Consultant Faculty, Department of Plant Pathology, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India. He has taught plant pathology to both undergraduate and postgraduate students and conducted research in diverse fields of plant pathology especially on rapeseed-mustard crops. He has published approximately 200 research articles and contributed several books, chapters, review articles, and teaching manuals. Prabhu Dayal Meena (Author) Dr. Prabhu Dayal Meena is Principal Scientist (Plant Pathology) at ICAR-Indian Institute of Rapeseed Mustard Research. He has conducted research on different aspects of rapeseed-mustard diseases, including host resistance, management, epidemiology, biology of crucifer's pathogens and also reported three new pathogens of rapeseed-mustard. He has been associated in the development of six high yielding varieties and registered seven traits of specific genotypes of rapeseed-mustard. He has published over 120 research papers, reviews, book chapters and several books.
