The study of climate change has highlighted the need to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, especially in industries such as cement and concrete, responsible for 7% of total human-generated emissions. The search for sustainable alternatives has led to the exploration of biomineralization and the use of non-pathogenic microorganisms as "bio-restoration agents" in concrete structures. This process, in which microorganisms synthesize minerals, is classified into induced, controlled and biologically influenced mineralization. A multidisciplinary approach is crucial to overcome the challenges and advance sustainable conservation.
Iván Manrrique Hughes is an Environmental Engineer and did his graduate thesis at the Chair of Microbiology, Multidisciplinary Institute of Plant Biology (IMBIV), National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, National University of Córdoba, Córdoba, Argentina.
