Compares high Tc conductors with conventional low Tc conductors, discussing how these oxides differ from regular metals in their normal state. Aiming to provide answers to such questions, this text draws particularly on similarities between the high Tc oxides and granular superconductors.
How new are the high Tc superconductors, as compared to the conventional low Tc ones? In what sense are these oxides different from regular metals in their normal state? How different is the mechanism for high Tc superconductivity from the well-known electron-phonon interaction that explains so well superconductivity in metals and alloys? What are the implications of the new features of the high Tc oxides for their practical applications? This interesting book aims to provide some answers to those questions, drawing particularly on similarities between the high Tc oxides and granular superconductors, which also present a short coherence length and a small superfluid density.

Different kinds of superconductors; granular and percolating superconductors - structure, transport, Tc enhancement; from strong to weak screening - a possible reason for Tc enhancement, the role of a reduced dimensionality; granular superconductors in the very weak screening regime - fluctuation effects (amplitude and phase), interplay between charging energy and Josephson coupling, the insulator-superconductor transition in granular AI; the heat capacity transition in the cuprates, fluctuation effects; the BCS gap equation in the weak screening regime - gap anisotropy, application to the case of the cuprates; Andreev reflections - BTK, many-body effects, effect of gap anisotropy; interference experiments on the gap symmetry - Andreev reflections with nodes in the gap, angular dependence of critical current, two- and three-junction experiments; boundary effects with short coherence length superconductors, high Tc junctions; the vortex state, Hc2, anisotropy and irreversibility line; the vortex state - vortex lattice, vortex glass, vortex liquid.
