These mineral nutrients play both structural and functional roles within the plants, with some elements offering beneficial effects. The interactions between mineral elements and soil organic matter, clay minerals, soil microorganisms, and other associated mineral elements determine their availability and dynamics in the soil.
A thorough understanding of the dynamics of plant nutrients in the soil is crucial for effective nutrient management. Soil organic matter not only provides the necessary nutrients for crops but also enhances the biological and physical properties of the soil. This section offers information on the production and management of organic manures, biofertilizers, integrated nutrient management in cropping systems, and nutrient management in problematic soils.
Sharanappa obtained his B.Sc. (Agriculture), M.Sc.(Agriculture) and Ph.D. (Agronomy) from University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore. He served in the University of Agricultural Sciences as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor and Professor and Head of the Department of Agronomy for 34 years in teaching, research and extension. At present as Emeritus Professor of ICAR. Under his guidance nine students secured PhD. (Agronomy) and 14 students M. Sc.(Agriculture) in the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. He served as member of the advisory committee of 68 postgraduate students. His special interest in teaching and research are Organic Farming, Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management in Crops and Cropping Systems. He has developed technologies for nutrient management for organic groundnut, onion, chilli, baby corn and finger millet production. He served as the Principal Investigator for DST funded research project on establishment of organic farming technology park in agroclimatalogically disadvantaged region of Karnataka state and NPOF funded project on establishment of Model Organic Farm at GKVK, Bengaluru. Thirty three research papers were published by him in NAAS rated scientific journals, and published the book on Oilseed Production. He has presented research papers in the international conferences held in Israel and USA on the precision nutrient management in maize and groundnut.
