An investigation of Ehrenbergs material 1108 from Cayenne in French Guyana, which is the type-material of many important or widespread diatoms, was carried out. Despite the very small quantity of material available and the relatively poor content of diatoms most of the taxa described by Ehrenberg could be identified. They are discussed in this paper and documented by more than 300 LM and SEM-micrographs. Lectotypes have been chosen for the following species: Eunotia camelus, E. pileus, E. quaternaria, E. quinaria, E. tridentula, E. zygodon, Himantidium
guianense, H. papilio, Pinnularia amphigomphus, P. pisciculus,
Stauroneis anceps, St. gracilis, St. lineolata, St. phyllodes. In
addition two new species (Gomphonema archaevibrio and Pinnularia pseudocardinalis) are described and Stauroneis anceps f. gracilis Rabh. is raised to species rank. In an appendix by R.Jahn photographs of the marked species on five original mica are presented together with an account of the Ehrenberg-Collection, the condition of the mica and critical remarks on future work with this collection.
