The eco-friendly and sustainable technology of constructed wetlands is well established and attracting increasing attention. There are two basic elements of this treatment technology: the plant species and the materials. But what are the various plants and substrate media that are used in constructed wetlands around the world? And what is their exact role in the system performance? This book summarizes all the up-to-date information and research and presents an integrated answer to these fundamental questions.

Alexandros I. Stefanakis is an Environmental Engineer with a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and a M.Sc. degree in the field of Hydraulic Engineering, both from Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. His M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses focused on ecological engineering, specifically the ecological treatment of wastewater and sludge dewatering using constructed wetlands. He has 10 years of experience in the field of water engineering and water resources engineering and specializes in natural systems for wastewater treatment with emphasis on constructed wetland systems. He has published several papers in international peer-reviewed journals, many papers in international conference proceedings, two books on constructed wetlands, technical reports, lecture notes, and book chapters on environmental and ecological engineering. He has taught at both the undergraduate and the postgraduate level in Greece and the UK. He has been employed as Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton in the UK, as Research Scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Germany, as Guest Scientist in Portugal (University of Beira Interior), and as Research Assistant in Greece (Democritus University of Thrace). His research work includes numerous experiments on different treatment methods. He has and still participates in various national and EU research projects in Greece (Democritus University of Thrace, University of Patras), Portugal (University of Beira Interior), Germany (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ), the UK (University of Brighton) and in Oman (Bauer Resources). He serves as a reviewer for more than 25 international scientific journals and has been awarded twice during his career for his research work. He is also serving as a Research Ambassador in the field of Ecological Engineering for Elsevier STM Digest Program. Currently, Dr Stefanakis is employed as a Wetland Specialist and practicing Environmental Engineer in Oman (Bauer Resources), dealing with the design of constructed wetlands facilities for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment in the Middle East and the USA. He is also a Research Fellow in Greece by the State Scholarships Foundation - IKY, running a research project on Constructed Wetlands for agricultural wastewater treatment.
