This work analyzes five major bilateral treaty regimes on the South Asian subcontinent: between India and Bangladesh for the Ganges River; India and Nepal for the Kosi, Gandaki, and Mahakali rivers; and India and Pakistan for the Indus River. It also explains the legal regimes of these rivers.

It also explains the legal regimes of these rivers in the context of the serious challenges to the water resources of the subcontinent posed by significant population increases, urbanization, industrialization, and environmental degradation.

The authors are recognized experts in their fields. M. A. Salman is Lead Counsel in the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development and International Law Group of the World Bank's Legal Vice Presidency. He has published extensively in the area of water law. Kishor Uprety is Senior Counsel in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia Law Group of the World Bank's Legal Vice Presidency and has written widely on international law and development issues.
