Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Biology - Zoology, grade: 3.1, , language: English, abstract: Present study emphasizes the availability of small indigenous fish in two fish markets located at Midnapur town. During the present study, a comparative market survey has been conducted from 1st July to 30th Sept, 2019 for the study on available small indigenous fish fauna in two fish markets of Midnapur town, one is Raja bazar, a popular and high priced fish market, and another is Gate bazar, a market of low priced fish market of the same town. Results reveal that a total of 26 small indigenous fish species have been identified from the study sites. Among these 26 species, seven have been collected only from Gate bazar and ten only from Raja bazar and nine species have been observed as common to both the markets. The result would certainly enrich our knowledge about the availability of fish species in the fish market of Midnapur town.

Dr. Angsuman Chanda, B. Sc ( Gold Medallist ), M. Sc ( Gold Medallist ), Ph. D.,FISCA ( awarded as fellow of International Science Congress Association), is an Assistant Professor of Zoology, Post Graduate Department of Zoology, Raja N. L. Khan Women's College (AUTONOMOUS, NAAC Accredited - 'A' Grade ), affiliated under Vidyasagar University, Midnapur, Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, India. He was a bonafide research scholar of Zoological Survey of India and well trained on survey, collection, preservation of specimens, especially on crustacean fauna. Author is the writer of four text books, written three book chapters, published more than 28 research papers in Nationally & Internationally reputed Journals and attended several National & International Seminars. The author is engaged in teaching UG & PG students as well as perusing research work with keen interest on penaeid fishery, taxonomy and ecology from Indian water since last one and half decades. He has completed one Minor Research Project entitled 'Freshwater prawn ( Decapoda: Palaemonidae ) diversity of Paschim Medinipur', funded by University Grant Commission (UGC), Government of India. Author completed a Major Research Project entitled ' Small Indigenous Fish, Prawn, Crab & Molluscs of Paschim Medinipur, their protein value, food security and conservation of biodiversity for village people', also funded by UGC, Government of India [Ref. No. F. 42-610/2013 (SR) dt 22.03.2013]. At present author is the Principal Investigator of a major research project entitled 'Diversity of ornamental fishes with special ............ Medinipur and Jhargram districts' funded by West Bengal Biodiversity Board.
