The use of lasers to process materials for medical applications has steadily grown over the past decade. Lasers are finding significant academic and industrial use for coating, machining, melting, polymerising, sintering, and welding materials that are used to restore normal physiologic activity. Providing a broad overview, this book will highlight laser-based techniques such as selective laser sintering and laser machining, that are being used to process materials with small-scale features for medical applications. Processing of materials for use in cardiac stents, patient-specific prostheses, and tissue engineering scaffolds will also be examined in detail. Laser Processing of Materials for Medical Applications provides the first overview of laser materials for medical applications and will be beneficial to materials and manufacturing engineers, biological, computer and physical scientists looking for an overview of the developments in this area.
Roger Narayan MD, PhD is a Professor in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. He has authored over 150 publications as well as several book chapters on laser processing of biomedical materials. His work has demonstrated that laser-based thin film growth and additive manufacturing methods may be used to prepare biomaterials with unique structures and added functionalities for antimicrobial, biosensing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. He serves as an editorial board member for several academic journals, including as editor-in-chief of Materials Science and Engineering C: Materials for Biological Applications and Associate Editor of Applied Physics Reviews. Dr. Narayan has edited several well-known books, including the textbook Biomedical Materials (Springer) and the handbook Materials for Medical Devices (ASM International). Dr. Narayan has received several honors for his research activities, such as the NCSU Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award, the NCSU Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award, the University of North Carolina Jefferson-Pilot Fellowship in Academic Medicine, the National Science Faculty Early Career Development Award, the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, the Fulbright-Brazil Scientific Mobility Award, and the American Ceramic Society Richard M. Fulrath Award. He has been elected as Fellow of ASM International, AIMBE, and AAAS.
