There is more than one reason to present a new key book on amphipods for the Baltic Sea. First, it is an attempt to consider all marine species observed at least once in the whole catchment area. Several species are figured and described comprehensively for the first time here. Second, due to the rapid increase of non-indigenous species, we included species that seem to be in the process of becoming established as well as those that already are. Third, the present book combines the freshwater and marine amphipod inventory of the investigation area and of some adjacent regions. The reader now has the opportunity to rely on one monograph rather than having to combine several well-known handbooks from neighbouring areas. Altogether 243 amphipod species (190 marine and 53 freshwater species) are listed and in most instances comprehensively pictured and described. On 553 plates with about 4000 single drawings the species are illustrated. The present book covers species of three different amphipod suborders. The suborders are Gammaridea (27 families, 93 species), Senticaudata (27 families, 146 species and Hyperiidea (1 family, 4 species).

Dr. Michael L. Zettler is a senior scientist working in the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW, Warnemünde, Germany) since almost 20 years. As the leader of the working group “Ecology of Benthic Organisms” he is responsible for team activities dealing with taxonomy and ecology of macrozoobenthos including invertebrate groups as crustaceans, molluscs and polychaetes. His academic career began at the University of Rostock with diploma in biology (1993) and later PhD-thesis (1996) on a non-indigenous polychaete species of the genus Marenzelleria and its influence on the autochthonous benthic fauna in a German estuary. He is author and co-author of about 200 publications dealing with marine and freshwater benthic species. With Mollusca and Amphipoda two taxonomical groups have been a focus of scientific publications.

Anja Zettler is a junior scientist working in the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW, Warnemünde, Germany) since 2010. She is responsible for data and quality management. In 2006 she made her diploma in biology at the University of Bielefeld on annual and interannual variability of planktonic larvae in the Baltic Sea. She contributes the bigger part to the fantastic figures and plates. Her creativity and graphical talent were a basis for the success of the present book.
