(Please scoll down for english version)Wie sehr Naturkatastrophenschutz Teil der europäischen Landschaft geworden ist, zeigt die Arbeit »State of Nature«. Rund 50.000 km reiste Claudius Schulze dafür durch Europa und fotografierte mit seiner Großformatkamera von einem Kranwagen herab scheinbar malerische Landschaften. Doch jede dieser Idyllen hat einen Makel: Alpenpanoramen werden von Lawinenwänden zerschnitten, die Nordseeküste zerfurcht von Wellenbrechern. Auf jedem der Fotos ragen Schutzbauten in die Landschaft. Doch es geht in diesen Bildern nicht darum, die Grenze zwischen Kultur und Natur zu zeigen. Im Gegenteil: Die Fotos verdeutlichen, wie sehr sich beide Sphären durchdringen. "State of Nature" shows the extent that natural-disaster protection has become part of the European landscape. Claudius Schulze traveled about 50.000 km across Europe, photographing seemingly picturesque landscapes from a crane plat form with a large-format camera. But each of those idyllic scenes contains imperfections: alpine panoramas are crossed by snow sheds, the North Sea coast is furrowed by breakwaters. In each of the photographs, protective structures rise into the landscape. But these pictures are not about defining the boundary between culture and nature. On the contrary: the photographs demonstrate how much the two spheres penetrate each other.
Thomas Glade hat sich an der Universität Bonn habilitiert und ist seit Herbst 2006 Professor für Physiogeographie an der Universität Wien. Er ist Vorsitzender des Arbeitskreises in der Geographie "Naturrisiken und Sozialkatastrophen"
