Topics covered include fissures in clay and its mechanic characteristics, an examination of stress analysis data and modeling techniques using current computation tools, basics of laboratory testing of fissured clays, and case studies on soil failure and modeling methodology. This book will help geotechnical engineers and researchers gain a better understanding of soil applications of fracture mechanics, incorporate tools to better understand soil failure, and develop better, more cost-effective designs for earthworks projects.
Professor Luis E. Vallejo received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1977. He is currently a professor at the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department - University of Pittsburgh. He has published over 130 scientific articles, technical reports and conference papers in the area of Geotechnical Engineering and is currently member of the Editorial Board of the international journal: Geomechanics and Engineering, ASCE's Journal of Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering, and International Journal of Engineering Geology.
