This book addresses and synthesizes recent basic, translational, and clinical research with the goal of understanding the mechanisms behind autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how they lead to altered brain function and behavior. Bringing clarity to these mechanisms will lead to more effective therapies for the various heterogeneous pathologies that comprise ASD. Currently there are few, if any, proven therapies for the majority of the disorders. Among the topic addressed are neural plasticity, neuroimmunology, neuroinflammation, neuroimaging, and appropriate animal and genetic models.

Maria de los Angeles Robinson-Agramonte is the Head of Project Biomolecular Markers and Neurointervention in Autism Spectrum Disorders in the division of Science and Technology, CIREN, International Center for Neurological Restoration. She graduated from the Medical University of Santiago de Cuba with an MD, and went on to receive her Ph. D. in Immunology from the Medical School at Havana University. Dr. Robinson-Agramonte has since worked on basic and clinical research projects on Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Demyelinating diseases, and Neurodevelopment diseases with a focus on ASD. She has published more than 35 publications and five book chapters. She has won various National Annual Prizes, including the Cuban Science Academy award and the Cuban Society of Immunology's Clinical Research Award.

Autism: what is it.- Epidemiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders.- The Genetic Basis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.- Autism spectrum disorder: A clinical neurophysiology approach I.- Autism spectrum disorder: A clinical neurophysiology approach II.- Neuroimages in Autism.- Autism, development and neural plasticity.- Neuroinflammation in animal models of autism.- Understanding of neuroimmunology in autism spectrum disorder.- Antibody mediating autoimmune reaction in autism spectrum disorder.- Current therapies.

lt;p>"This book presents a constellation of research and clinical perspectives on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ... . This is a great resource and reference for students, researchers, and even clinicians who are particularly interested in ASD. Each chapter discusses various areas and aspects of ASD, which are nicely explained in detail while also providing broad conceptualization." (Soo Lee, Doody's Book Reviews, December, 2015)
