The progress in ultrafast laser sources has created a huge and diverse field of applications in science, medicine and industry. Intense laser pulses are used to probe the fundamentals of physics, precisely process materials, transfer high data rates or image small structures or chemical compositions, just to name a few.
Fiber lasers represent a particularly interesting architecture, since by relying on light guidance and amplification in optical waveguides they offer advantages in terms of compactness, efficiency, beam quality and high-average-power handling. In the realm of ultrashort pulses the tight confinement causes strong nonlinear interactions with the waveguide material which reshape, transform and modify the pulses. Due to the combination of nonlinearity, chromatic dispersion, gain and dissipation fiber lasers show rich and complex pulse dynamics. This turns the generation of high peak power levels challenging, but also opens up possibilities regarding spectral bandwidth generation or frequency conversion.
Exploiting the benefits of microstructured fibers this thesis pursues two main targets:
Significant performance scaling of modelocked fiber oscillators in terms of pulse energy, peak power, average power and pulse duration on the basis of very-large-mode-area fibers,
And,
Ultracompact, fiber-based laser systems for bio-medical imaging, relying on small core sizes and taking advantage of the strong nonlinear interaction along the fiber.
Besides investigations based on numerical simulations the thesis includes experimental realizations of high-power fiber oscillators as well as two-color fiber sources and their application to tissue imaging. The corresponding theoretical background and an overview of the subject matter is provided.
