Meeting the need for a comprehensive, yet accessible advanced textbook that conveys the physical foundation and puts effects into context, this is a treatment of the physics behind metamaterials, photonic crystals, soliton waves and many other novel developments. From the contents: * Maxwell Equations * Electromagnetic response of various inclusions * Effective permissivity * Exactly solvable models * Spatial dispersion * Metamaterials * Mesoscopic phenomena Pedagogically written, the text is suitable for readers unfamiliar with theoretical physics, and includes problems, with a separate solutions manual available to lecturers. A must-have for higher courses in electrical engineering, material research, physics and photonics.
Alexander A. Lisyansky is professor and chair of the Department of Physics, Queens College, CUNY, NY. Prior to this assignment, he served as head of the department of non-linear properties of magnetic crystals at the Institute for Physics and Engineering of the Academy of Sciences in Ukraine. He authored two books and over 130 research papers in refereed journals, and also serves as referee to Physics journals. In 1998 he was awarded the Queens College Presidential Research Award; his research earned several NSF grants. Alexey P. Vinogradov is professor and chief scientific researcher at the Institute for Theoretical and Applied Electromagnetism (ITAE), Moscow. He is author of three books (in Russian) and over 70 refereed papers, and holds numerous memberships with organizations like IEEE and committees of international conferences. Alexander M. Merzlikin is senior researcher at ITAE, and also author of numerous papers as well as a book. The research focus of all three is on electromagnetic effects in inhomogeneous media of various kinds.
