This cassette provides an account of how early ape-men of the African savanna developed into fully human beings. Leakey is interested in far more than the mere physical features presented by fossils, and here he is particularly concerned with non-tangible human attributes, such as consciousness.
The study of human origins can never stand still, as new fossils are constantly being discovered and theories of the ancestral tree have to be rejigged to accommodate the newcomers. In The Origin of Humankind, Richard Leakey relates the complex but engrossing story of how the course of human evolution has been unravelled, and touches on all the aspects of what it is to be 'human'.

Richard Leakey, the son of leading paleoanthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey, was Director of the National Museums of Kenya for twenty years and more recently has served his country in a more political role as Director of the Wildlife Service. He made the important discovery of the 'Turkana Boy', a virtually complete skeleton, and his popular books include Origins, The People of the Lake and The Making of Mankind. Sean Barrett narrated the BBC Modern History series, People's Century and appeared in television productions of Twelfth Night and Father Ted. Sean Barrett has narrated many television documentaries for the BBC and Discovery Channel, notably THE PEOPLE'S CENTURY, WALKING WITH BEASTS, and GREAT LIVES. As a member of the BBC Radio Rep, he has appeared in hundreds of radio plays, and played Father Gillespie in the BBC Worldservice / BBC7 serial WESTWAY throughout its eight year-run. As a film and television actor he has appeared in pieces as diverse as TWELFTH NIGHT and FATHER TED, and he is a doyen of audiobook reading, with acclaimed recordings of authors ranging from Chaucer to Beckett.
