Containing extracts from Bodmer and McKie's book "The Book of Man", this cassette details the quest to discover our genetic heritage, and its implications for our understanding of health and disease, as well as what it means to be human.
The Book of Man tells the story of one of mankind's greatest oddyseys. It is a quest that is leading to a new understanding of what it is to be a human being and it is being carried out under the auspices of the Human Genome Project - the massive international research effort aimed at delineating the exact molecular composition of the genes that make up Homo Sapiens. It is biology's answer to the Apollo Space Programme, and one that seemed a far distant dream when first proposed twenty years ago. Walter Bodmer and Robin McKie describe both the scientific challenges that have been overcome in bringing genetics to this remarkable state and the difficulties that still lie ahead. This tape is the story of mankind's greatest voyage - a voyage that is changing all our lives.

Sir Walter Bodmer is one of the world's most distinguished human geneticists and former president of the Human Genome Organisation (Hugo). He has been a professor at Stanford University, Professor of Genetics at Oxford University and Director General of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. He is now Principal of Hertford College, Oxford and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. Robin McKie is Science Editor of The Observer. He has followed the story of modern molecular biology's flowering and has written numerous articles and books on the subject.
