This volume in the "Oryx Frontiers of Science Series" covers advances and issues in oceanography relevant to 2000/2001.
This volume describes and evaluates the major current research developments in the ocean sciences. Topics include advances in measuring ocean phenomena from space, ^Iin situ^R instruments, and the development of fully integrated observing systems that allow investigators to take environmental snapshots of areas that must be monitored in order to protect property and save lives. The authors emphasize that today's successful oceanographic programs rely on multidisciplinary, integrated, and task-organized teams of varying professionals, marine technicians, and oceanographers.

Also discussed are the World Wide Web, distributed databases, and computer models that allow research and operational oceanographers to share information to build useful products and make new discoveries.

C. REID NICHOLS is President of Marine Information Resources Corporation (MIRC), and Executive Director for the Bay Bus Partnership Project. DAVID LARSEN PORTER is a Principal Senior Staff Oceanographer for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's Ocean Remote Sensing Group and Senior Physical Oceanographer for MIRC./e Porter has an extensive background in physics, mathematics, fluid dynamics, and physical oceanography. He has published extensively in his field and teaches graduate courses in oceanography. ROBERT G. WILLIAMS is Senior Physical Oceanographer at MIRC./e His experience ranges from research in acoustical oceanography for the U.S. Navy to applied oceanography for NOAA. He has worked extensively in oceanographic instrumentation, the design of field experiments, remote sensing, and environmental characterization. He is an instructor in physics, astronomy, and meteorology at Craven Community College, New Bern, N.C., and is on the research committee of the Neuse River Foundation.
