Presents an introduction to several fundamental chemistry concepts through goal-oriented problems. "Liftoff!" has been developed in response to the National Science Foundation's urge to reform the undergraduate chemistry curriculum and improve science literacy to meet the needs of students today.
"Liftoff!" presents an introduction to several fundamental chemistry concepts through goal-oriented problems. Developed in response to the National Science Foundation's urge to reform the undergraduate chemistry curriculum and improve science literacy to meet the needs of students today, "Liftoff!" enables students to encounter real-world situations via interactive problems. Students can hypothesize, test, analyze, and draw conclusive, substantiated arguments backed by chemical calculations. Each chemical concept can be visualized through the presentation of descriptive text passages together with animations, video clips, photographs, graphs or charts, interactive exercises and/or commentary by live consultants. Hot links allow students to browse through key words and an interactive index. The coverage in "Knowledge Base" is similar to that in a general chemistry textbook. It includes three-dimensional and two-dimensional animations, interactive exercises, simulations, full motion video, and supporting narrative in text and multimedia.
Some examples of how it can be used in the classroom are: animations to illustrate chemical content; as a source of team problems; calculations for problem-solving; and videos of chemical demonstrations. The "Spacecraft Manual" contains technical material regarding "Liftoff!", including information on the main engines, propellants, tank specifications, and normal launch data. The consultants are scientific personnel who can provide verbal comments and hints regarding both the chemical content and possible solution pathways. The chemical tools include a periodic table, a calculator, and tables of chemical data. "Liftoff!" is a dual-platform CD-ROM. The following are minimum hardware requirements for running it: Macintosh version - Apple Macintosh IICX or better, system 7.0, 8 megabytes of RAM, 5 megabytes of free hard drive space, 13" colour monitor (resolution of 640x480), 8-bit colour card (256) colour), Macintosh-compatible CD-ROM drive; and Windows version - Multimedia PC (MPC-II) or equivalent PC, MS-DOS 3.1 or higher, Windows 3.1 and mouse, 8 megabytes of RAM, 5 megabytes of free hard drive space, S-VGA video controller to display 256 colours in Windows, MPC-compatible audio board, MPC-compatible CD-ROM drive.
