An innovation in the explanation and practice of acoustical design, allowing sounds to be "previewed". The first CD-ROM presents the principles of acoustics and how sound functions in spaces; the second allows the user to evaluate how different sounds are heard in outdoor and indoor spaces.
The acoustical effects of spaces are one of the essential components for architects to consider, whether they are designing specifically acoustical spaces such as auditoria or accounting for the effects of sound in classrooms, conference rooms, or living rooms. This is an innovation in the explanation and practice of acoustical design in that it allows sounds to be "previewed" as they would actually be heard in a given space. It consists of two CD-ROMs: the first presents the principles of acoustics and how sound functions in indoor and outdoor spaces; the second allows the user to evaluate how different kinds of sounds are heard in outdoor and indoor spaces. Together, they provide a resource for designing with sound effects in mind.

Acentech is an multidisciplinary acoustical consulting firm more than 50 years' old, with offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Thousand Oaks, California. Acentech senior consultant James P. Cowan, principal author of this book, has extensive experience in architectural acoustics and environmental noise issues and has managed hundreds of projects across the country. He conducts seminars and teaches classes on acoustical topics for the American Institute of Architects and other associations, municipalities, educational institutions, and firms. He is a board-certified noise control engineer and the author of Handbook of Environmental Acoustics, Architectural Acoustics, a CD-ROM, and many educational articles on acoustical topics.
