It then raises some of the ethical and social issues that confront us. Is it right to interfere with nature? Is the risk to the environment to great? Should we use it on humans? Should companies be allowed to exploit it? Who should control it? Some prominent Australians comment on these issues. They are: Sir Gustav Nossal, medical research director; Dr Robyn Rowland, associate professor of women's studies; Prof. Peter Singer, Australia's foremost philosopher; Peter Garrett, singer and environmentalist; Carmel Travers, TV science journalist. Additional comments are provided by Loane Skene, Victorian Law Reform Commissions, Dr Merilyn Sleigh, a genetic engineer from CSIRO, and Dr Edwina Cornish, director of research for a commercial company.
