Neurodegeneration is the umbrella term for the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons, including the death of neurons. Many neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's occur as a result of neurodegenerative processes. This book presents current research in the study of neurodegeneration, including oxidative stress-mediated neurodegeneration; preserving motoneuron viability and function during disease or after traumatic injury; research in aspects of excitotoxicity mechanisms; uncoupling proteins as therapeutic targets in stroke and neurodegenerative diseases; the genetics and molecular biology of Alzheimer's Disease; and retinal neurodegeneration in diabetic retinopathy.
Preface; Oxidative Stress-Mediated Neurodegeneration: A Tale of Two Models; Mechanisms of the Motoneuron Stress Response & its Relevance in Neurodegeneration; Methylene Blue Induces Mitochondrial Complex IV & Improves Cognitive Function & Grip Strength in Old Mice; Receptor Specific Features of Excitotoxicity Induced Neurodegeneration; Mitochondrial Uncoupling Proteins: Therapeutic Targets in Neurodegeneration?`; Alterations in N-methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) Receptor Function & Potential Involvement in Anesthetic-Induced Neurodegeneration; Genetics & Molecular Biology of Alzheimer's Disease & Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration: Analogies & Differences; The Cholinergic Neuron in Alzheimer's Disease; Retinal Neurodegeneration is an Early Event in the Pathogenesis of Diabetic Retinopathy: Therapeutic Implications; Molecular Imaging & Parkinson's Disease; Index.
