There has never been a more confusing time to try to be healthy. In the past decade, the healthcare sector has witnessed a remarkable surge in innovation: drug design, genomics and diagnostic technology have all changed almost beyond recognition.

Simultaneously, there has been a significant expansion in consumer health services, including the supplement industry, blood testing, consumer genomics and wearable technology, which claim to improve “wellness” (emphasising physical and mental performance and longevity) rather than curing or preventing specific disease states.

For a typical consumer this is both confusing, as the health and wellness industries are almost indistinguishable, and expensive, as consumer health emphasises personalised products, often sold on a subscription basis.

In Make Me Well, Xand van Tulleken investigates the new Wild West of the wellness industry, demystifying a landscape dominated by three products: supplements, blood testing, and wearable technology. In doing so, he shines a light on how people can take care of themselves better in this new and overwhelming world of wellness.

Xand van Tulleken trained in medicine at the University of Oxford and practised as a doctor in the UK for a decade in A&E and acute medicine. He is a broadcaster for the long-running, BAFTA winning children's series Operation Ouch, the lead doctor on BBC One's Morning Live, and co-host of the podcast A Thorough Examination. Alongside his broadcasting work, Xand is an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL's Health of the Public Institute. His academic work focuses on humanitarian assistance and he trained in tropical medicine at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine before completing a Master's in Public Health at Harvard University as a Fulbright Scholar. His humanitarian work has taken him to crises in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Uganda, and Sudan. He also spent a decade in New York as the Academic Director of the Institute for Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University.
