This book is a comprehensive overview of different forms of smokeless tobacco (ST) products consumed globally and their effect on periodontal health. It opens with the demographic descriptions of epidemiology of ST products availability and an analysis of global and regional trends in ST use. Following chapters provide a thorough review of existing literature on the impact of ST on periodontal tissues and peri-implant health. The book covers mechanisms of damage, investigating the biological mechanisms through which ST products cause damage and influence peri-implant conditions, as well as the clinical manifestations of ST on gingival inflammation and recession, attachment loss, alveolar bone resorption around teeth, tooth mobility and loss and peri-implant health post dental implant placement. The final chapter explores preventive strategies and habit interventions aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of smokeless tobacco on periodontal and peri-implant health. Autor

Saman Warnakulasuriya FDSRCS, Dip in Oral Med, PhD, DSc, FKC is Professor Emeritus at King s College London and has been the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Oral Cancer since 2005. He is a Past President of the British Dental Association (Metropolitan Branch). Dr. Warnakulasuriya has served on several expert working groups of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to evaluate carcinogenicity of substances including smokeless tobacco to humans. He has delivered numerous keynote lectures at international Oral Medicine, Pathology, and Oncology conferences and was on the organizing committee and co-chaired the inaugural Global Oral Cancer Forum in New York in 2016 and the second forum in Kula Lumpur in 2024. He is a global expert on the epidemiology and risk factors on oral cancer, developed the nomenclature of oral potentially malignant disorders, and has authored more than 350 scientific articles as well as four books, including the Springer Textbook on Oral Cancer: Prevention, Diagnosis and Management, and most recently the Springer Textbook Oral Submucous Fibrosis: A Guide to Diagnosis and Management. He is a member of the editorial boards of Oral Oncology, Oral Diseases and Clinical Oral Investigations. Dr. Warnakulasuriya has received an OBE award from Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom for services to Medicine and was awarded the IADR's Distinguished Scientist Awards for Oral Medicine & Pathology (2015) and Global Oral Health Research (2022). He is a Fellow of King's College London.

Fawad Javed, B.D.S., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, NY, USA. Dr. Javed has authored over 260 peer-reviewed publications, including 78 systematic reviews, and has edited seven textbooks spanning diverse topics in oral health and disease. His scholarly influence has been recognized globally, ranking him among the top 0.2% of Dentistry scholars and the top 0.3% of Oral Health scholars in the past five years (2025). Dr. Javed has received numerous honors, including the Editor of Distinction Award (2025) and the Author Service Award (2025) from BMC Oral Health (Springer Nature), as well as multiple earlier accolades such as the Outstanding Reviewer Certificate from the Archives of Oral Biology (2017), the Award of Scholarly Excellence from the Department of General Dentistry at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, USA (2017), the Excellence in Reviewing Award from Clinical Oral Investigations (2015), and Excellence in Performance and Distinguished Researcher Awards from the President of King Saud University, Riyadh Saudi Arabia (2011, 2012). In addition, he serves on the editorial boards of more than 70 indexed medical and dental journals, reflecting his extensive contributions to peer review and scientific scholarship.
