Breast cancer centres, whether new or well established, strive to deliver the highest quality care possible within the limits of their financial and personnel resources. Written by a multidisciplinary team of over 130 experts from across 30 countries, it provides practical strategies for delivering high quality integrated breast cancer care tailored to local economics and resources constraints.
Covering every component of the care pathway including imaging, surgery, systemic treatment, nursing, and genetic assessment, the book combines theoretical insights with practical guidance. It defines the targets to strive for, methods to assess care, and key recommendations for how to improve within existing limitations. The book also looks beyond the breast care unit to consider broader themes including accreditation and certification, emerging technologies, media, and the role of government in shaping care.
This practical guide will be valuable for anyone working in the field of integrated breast cancer care, including breast care clinicians, those new to the field, and policy makers interested in the social, financial, and political aspects of improving breast care quality.

Didier Verhoeven is a medical oncologist at AZ Klina, Belgium. He graduated from the University of Antwerp and obtained a master's degree in medical research at the University of Brussels. His completed his PhD at the University of Antwerp, with the thesis "Tumor cell proliferation and stromal changes in Breast cancer." He was appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Antwerp in 2014. Although he is a clinician at heart, an important part of Professor Verhoeven's work is about quality improvement projects and global breast cancer care. From 2021 onwards he participated to The Lancet Breast Cancer Commission, and to the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) of the WHO. In 2023 he took the initiative for the Grand Rounds eCANCER webinars on global breast cancer quality care. He actively participated to the International Congress of Breast Disease Centers in Paris, and in the organization of the IOLC conferences which bring together oncology leaders around the world. Cary S. Kaufman was trained at UCLA and the University of Washington, USA. He is Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington and the Medical Director of the Bellingham Regional Breast Center. His professional activity focusses on individual patient care, breast cancer research, and teaching and education of the local community and of physicians. Recently he lectured in India, China, Scotland, Brazil, Peru and Poland. He is a founding member and past-Chairman of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers as well as past-President of the National Consortium of Breast Centers. Pankaj G. Roy is a consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon in Oxford, UK. She graduated from the University of New Delhi, India, and underwent further higher surgical training at Oxford. She was selected for a Fellowship in Nottingham and did a higher degree in research in breast cancer at the University of Dundee. She is actively involved in breast cancer research and is the principal investigator in Oxford for several international studies. She is the Director of cancer services at Oxford and was instrumental in establishing a high quality oncoplastic breast surgery unit in Oxford. She runs educational webinars and a dedicated course (OOPS) to facilitate the teaching, training and adoption of oncoplastic breast surgery worldwide. She played a key role along with Didier Verhoeven in setting up Grand Rounds eCANCER webinars on global breast cancer quality care. She strongly advocates a holistic and individualised approach to breast cancer care. Sabine Siesling, Clinical Epidemiologist, is Professor 'Outcomes Research and Personalized cancer care' at the University of Twente, The Netherlands, and Senior Researcher at the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organisation (IKNL). She is curious about the effects of interventions, such as care pathways or implementation of new technologies, on the quality, organisation, and outcome of cancer care. Using data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry she tailors care and follow-up using and developing prediction models. As a board member of the National Breast Cancer Working Goup (NABON) and the European Initiative on Breast Cancer Care-Quality Assurance Development group (ECIBC) she aims towards optimal breast cancer care. As former board member of the European (ENCR) and International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC), and president of the Netherlands Epidemiological Society, she strives towards more use of real-world data.
