This book provides students and researchers worldwide with much-updated scientific data, generic and specific, of both positive and negative interactions of clay and clay minerals on human health and living quality, either externally/topically applied (mud therapy and pelotherapy) or internally applied (clayey soil and edible clay geophagy). It is particularly addressed to upper-level undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate students and researchers doing studies and research. Particularly in the last decade, and as the output of scientific and technical developments has increased, so-called clay-drug hybrid materials and clay-drug delivery systems have become a matter of extensive biomedical research and application, both as formulation additives and drug carriers using a variety of routes, including oral release of active substances. Based on special clay minerals, this collection gathers too integrative transdermal and local administration, drug encapsulation, and the formation of bactericidal clay mineral surfaces following laboratorial modification.

Celso de Sousa Figueiredo Gomes obtained, in 1961, a degree in Geological Sciences from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, where, until 1968, he was Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Sciences. Between 1968-1975 he was Chief Geologist of the Geological Survey of Angola. He also obtained, in 1979, a PhD degree in Materials Sciences from the University of Leeds, UK. He was successively Auxiliar, Associate and Full Professor of the University of Aveiro, Portugal, until his retirement in 2003. He is specialized in Clay Science, both fundamental and applied.Eduardo Anselmo Ferreira da Silva has a degree in Geological Engineering (1986) and a PhD in Geosciences from the University of Aveiro (UA). He is currently a full professor in the Department of Geosciences of UA and a researcher at the GeobioTec Research Unit (FCT) at the University of Aveiro. João Baptista Pereira Silva has a degree in Geological Engineering (1996) and a PhD in Geosciences (2002) from the University of Aveiro. Since 2003, he has been an Integrated Researcher at the FCT and, since 2007, a Researcher at the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, Portugal.
