The author, Jordan-Bel is a highly trained teacher and person centred counsellor, professional interpreter/translator for the Police, Courts and Public Services who has not only assisted criminals and minor delinquents but also reaped a wide experience of teenagers and adults from varying social circles and income groups. Forty years of close contact with mental health authorities, social workers, and the Outreach Team, at times, raised a flickering hope for change but that hope has been severely dampened, perhaps not extinguished but difficult to re-ignite. This book is the story of a 40-year battle by a mother, to save her schizophrenic son and hence herself, from the darkness of despair and failing mental health services. The gradual unfolding of her efforts to steer her son Jean-Louis, through the treacherous paths of mental illness and addiction undoubtedly concords with the experience and suffering of many parents and carers. Jean-Louis's chaotic journey and cries for help were of little interest to so-called professionals. We witness the devastating phone call that shattered her hopes and dreams for her son and plunged her into the world of police, courts, prison, and psychiatric hospitals, fuelled by a culture of 'we know best'. It seems that no one really listened and if they did, they were too afraid to show initiative and so passed the buck to someone else and ticked the box. There are a lot of boxes along the bumpy road of life, but the powerful force of a mother's love can be a welcome companion to mitigate the pain. You may judge for yourself the consequences of passing the buck and what might have been the outcome, if professionals had listened and had the courage and time, to stop the buck and use their own initiative. The tragicomedy of life is the fire that fuels Jordan-Bel's determination and reignites the flame of hope in all she does. Despite her own physical loss of voice to MND, she hopes others will take up the cudgels and be inspired by "Don't Quit".
