UMMS gained statewide, national, and international acclaim for its trauma care, transplant program, cardiology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and cancer care. UMMS also pioneered breakthroughs in radiology and clinical laboratories and the operating room of the future. The ripples of revitalization spread beyond medicine and the hospital walls. UMMS transformation fueled economic growth, created jobs, and opened doors for minority-owned businesses in West Baltimore and beyond. In 2025, UMMS is a nearly $5 billion system of twelve hospitals with more than 150 locations across the state. The UMMS network of academic, community, and specialty hospitals provides 25 percent of all hospital-based care in Maryland.
