Enrique Regidor is epidemiologist at the Center for Biomedical Research in Epidemiology and Public Health Network (CIBERESP), Madrid, Spain. He is the author of numerous empirical studies on the relationship between social position and health and on the evaluation of public health interventions on population health. He is also the author of essays in which he reflects on scientific practice and its limitations in identifying causal relationships. He considers the symbiosis between skepticism and empiricism, which asks questions again and again in search of findings contrary to the defended hypothesis, as the best alternative for the advancement of scientific knowledge. At the same time, he recognizes the enormous nature of this task since science is a human activity. And, as such, subjective judgments in the interpretation of facts and consensual truths without the support of empirical evidence are commonplace in science.
