The book provides an orientation to the diagnoses of eating disorders along with current information about evidence-based practices for multidisciplinary treatment. Unlike other books on eating disorders, this book conceptualizes eating disorder treatment as a team effort, focusing on the psychotherapist and their role as a member within a comprehensive treatment team.

Keane and Mendes identify the primary components of an eating disorderspecialized multidisciplinary “treatment team”: a therapist to provide ongoing psychotherapy and care coordination, a medical provider to oversee medical complications and general medical stability, a registered dietitian to provide nutrition counseling and manage nutritional status. It is increasingly common that adjunctive disciplines are also involved in the treatment team, such as integrative therapists, couple’s counselors, school counselors, and other supports. Through the experiences of seasoned eating disorder experts, readers will learn the basic tenets of eating disorder treatment, diagnostic differences between disorders, effective treatments, case examples, and sage clinical advice. Chapters are written from the perspective of a psychotherapist, as well as from that of a registered dietitian and a medical physician.

Designed to prepare both experienced and novice psychotherapists, as well as master’s and doctoral students, for providing eating disorder treatment, this easy-to-read book is a must for any psychotherapist considering work with eating disorders.

Robert J. Keane, PhD, is a senior behavioral health administrator and the Assistant Vice President of Program Development and Training at Walden Behavioral Care. He has over 40 years of experience treating diverse populations within the mental health community. Kameron M. Mendes, LMHC, has clinical and administrative experience across a range of treatment settings, including psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, residential care, and intensive outpatient programs. He provides outpatient therapy at Renovated Wellness in Lynnfield, MA, while earning his PhD.
