The book offers insights into maternal and child health, the health service provided to women in their childbearing age and children. The targets for maternal child health include all women in their reproductive age groups up to 49 years and children from toddlers to adolescents. The book emphasizes maternal health as the health of the gestational parent during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The book also teaches the term "mother" as "gestational parent," inclusive of people who can become pregnant of various genders. This book also collates the importance of maternal and newborn nutrition supporting development and greater economic prosperity, as good nutrition in the beginning years of childhood supports a healthy start for children. At the same time, pregnant women need good food for their well-being and their babies' health regarding cognitive behavior, language, and personal–social skill development. The book also covers the aspects of maternal malnutrition resulting in compromised children's health and development. This book also provides relevance to good maternal health care and nutrition, promoting child survival and preventing adverse conditions like stillbirths and neonatal deaths. The book also covers maternal age, parity, education, marital status, and socio-economic status.
