Denture adhesives were introduced at the same time as modern dentistry at the end of the 18th century, and since then they have become widely available commercial products. The appropriate use of denture adhesive as a complement, not a replacement, to good full denture therapy must be carefully and thoroughly presented to patients before new dentures are fitted. Denture adhesives can be used effectively to increase denture stability and retention in well-fitting complete dentures, enhancing denture performance, patient comfort and satisfaction, while improving tissue health. Inappropriate use of these adhesives, outside the recommendations provided, can have a negative impact on prosthetic durability and oral health.
