In The Outer Brain, Dr. Robert Norman posits that the skin, the body’s largest organ, is an external nervous system that not only responds to stimuli but can clearly show us the earliest stages of significant changes in brain health. By monitoring and enhancing skin health, we can promote better brain health as we age.
Dermatologists have long known how to read the signals the skin sends: it is a window to our physical health. However, the latest science shows that the skin--the body’s largest organ--is more than just a protective coating that keeps our bones and bits in place. It is in fact an outer brain--an external nervous system--that not only responds to stimuli but can clearly show us the earliest stages of significant changes in brain health.
As one of the country’s preeminent neurodermatologists who specializes in the intersection of geriatrics, neurology, and dermatology, Dr. Robert Norman is uniquely poised to fully explore, for the first time, the symbiotic relationship between the skin and brain. In easy-to-follow language, Dr. Norman will explain exactly how our skin reflects critical changes to the way we think, feel, and perceive, as well as our ability to handle stress and make decisions. By knowing how to read its signals, the skin can reveal the beginning stages of depression, personality disorders, dementias, including Alzheimer’s disease, and even Parkinson’s, long before these diseases wreak personal havoc. What’s more, readers will learn what they can do right now to protect, enhance, and even reverse changes to both our inner and outer brain.

Dr. Robert A. Norman is a leading authority in Geriatric Dermatology. He is a board-certified dermatologist and family practitioner who has been in practice for over 35 years and holds master’s degrees in both Public Health and Business Administration. He is a faculty member (Clinical Professor) at two medical schools and many PA and ARNP schools and has been honored with numerous service and teaching awards, including Physician of the Year (2005) and Distinguished Service Award (2007) in Tampa, Florida; Tampa Bay Medical Hero Award (2008), and the Hadassah Humanitarian Award (2012). Dr. Norman has a private practice and is the chief physician and owner of Dermatology Healthcare, which has delivered essential skin care services for nursing home patients since 1994. He is also the founder of the Norman Center for Neurodermatology, which investigates the interactions between the brain and the skin in relation to disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Neurodermatitis, and others. Dr. Norman has written and edite
