This manual presents a systematic approach to procurement and examination of bone marrow by haematologists and oncologists. It is designed for medical students, house officers, physicians and other health professionals with an interest in haematology and oncology. It can also be used as a readily available, contemporary reference source for technologists and nurses who are involved in assisting in bone marrow aspiration, biopsy procurement and processing of marrow for cytological, immunological and histological examination. Although most practicing haematologists are familiar with bone marrow sampling techniques for diagnostic evaluation, there is a growing body of information that merits review, critical analysis and consolidation in one working reference, which this manual provides.
Dr Islam was trained at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London, England, under the renowned haematology professors D. A. G. Galton, John M. Goldman and Daniel Catovsky. While there, he researched bone marrow structure in human leukaemia, which earned him a PhD degree from London University, England. He obtained his membership and fellowship in haematology from the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom. Because of his significant work in leukaemia and bone marrow investigation, he was invited to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, where he continued his work with Edward Henderson, MD, Chief of Medical Oncology.
