This textbook for advanced graduate and postgraduate students in veterinary medicine covers principles and concepts of physiological functions, including cellular structures, organ systems, sensory, and reproductive systems. It also explores the physiological changes that occur under different environmental conditions.
This textbook for advanced graduate and postgraduate veterinary students, introduces animal behaviour, offering insights into its origins, cognitive aspects, communication, environmental influences, biological mechanisms, complex behaviours, adaptive strategies, and practical applications. The initial chapters present fundamental principles underpinning animal behaviour, elucidating the roles of evolution, genetics, and ecology. Subsequent chapters introduce the role of natural selection, habitat selection, and pheromones, alongside exploring conflicts, predator-prey dynamics, and the impact of domestication on behaviour. The book further delves into topics such as habitat selection, foraging strategies, predator-prey dynamics, and the effects of domestication on behaviour. It unravels the mysteries of animal defences, altruism, social dominance, territoriality, and the finely tuned art of food and habitat selection. Additionally, it covers the biological mechanisms governing behaviour, unearthing the roles played by neuroendocrinology, biological clocks, and genetics. Towards the end, the textbook examines the practical relevance of behavioural insights in veterinary science.

Dr. Tanmoy Rana is an accomplished veterinary professional and academician currently serving as Assistant Professor at the esteemed West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS) in Kolkata, India. Previously, he has obtained his Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BV.Sc & A.H.) and a Master's degree (M.V.Sc.) in Veterinary Clinical Sciences from WBUAFS. He has pursued a Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta, focusing on veterinary clinical studies. Before joining academia, Dr. Rana contributed to the welfare of animals and communities as a dedicated Veterinary Officer in the ARD department of the Government of West Bengal, India. In addition to his research endeavours, Dr. Rana shares his knowledge through teaching. He has conducted numerous lectures on arsenicosis at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute's Eastern Regional Station, making a significant impact on future veterinarians. His dedication to science and academia has earned him numerous awards, including merit fellowships for academic excellence and national scholarships during his higher secondary and secondary education. He has published several research articles in journal of high repute and has contributed several chapters and edited numerous books. He is editorial board member of several international journals and organized international and national conferences.
