Bicuspid Aortic Valve Syndrome
Springer International Publishing (Verlag)
978-3-031-85588-7 (ISBN)
The objective of this text-atlas is to examine the bicuspid aortic valve syndrome (BAV) holistically. The various chapters deal with epidemiology, morphological spectrum, embryology, associated congenital heart disease, genetics and familiarity, natural history, including clinically relevant valve complications (stenosis, regurgitation, endocarditis) and/or vascular complications affecting the thoracic aorta (dilatation, aneurysm, dissection) that require close clinical follow-up. In addition, multimodal imaging and surgical and transcatheter therapeutic options will be described. To the best of our knowledge, this will be the first illustrated monograph on this topic and will be enriched with numerous original illustrations.Offering in-depth visual representations, clinical insights and comprehensive data, it will provide experts with the tools they need to improve understanding and treatment of this unique heart conition, advancing patient care and research in the field of cardiovascular health.
Prof. Thiene's research interests extend to all fields of cardiovascular medicine and pathology, in particular to the clinico-pathological studies and the clinical translation of basic research. He first reported Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy (AC) as a leading cause of sudden death in young people and athletes (NEJM 1988) and helped to elucidate its genetic basis (Human Genetics 2004). He is the principal architect of the Italian programme in which all young individuals participating in sporting activities are screened for potential cardiovascular problems. Prof. Thiene is the leader of the Padua group that has worked at the interface between pathology and genetics in cardiomyopathies and has identified several disease-causing mutations, correlating them with the clinical and pathological features of the disease.
He has published 1150 reports of original investigations and reviews in indexed leading journals of pathology and cardiovascular medicine (7 in the New England Journal of Medicine and 52 in Circulation), and is also co-author and/or co-editor of 25 monographs. His articles have garnered an H-index: 139; citation Times: 111,216 (Google Scholar Citations).
Dr. Chiara Fraccaro specialised in cardiology (2008) at the University of Padua. She obtained a European Doctorate in Cardiovascular Sciences (2009-2011) with a thesis on transcatheter aortic valve replacement and a Master's Degree in Interventional Cardiology (GISE/EAPCI/SCAI certified). Currentely she is first operator in both structural and coronary procedures in the catheterization laboratory of the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Sciences in Padua. She is Vice-Director of the postgraduate university course of Interventional Treatment of Structural Heart Disease with Multimodal Imaging at the same university, and a member of the main Italian cardiac scientific societies (GISE, SIC and ANMCO). She is also a member of the European EAPCI Digital Communication Committee (2018-2020), the EAPCI Women Committee (2018-2020) and the EAPCI Scientific Document & Initiative Committee SDIC (2020-2022). She is currently a member of the Lancet Commission on Atherosclerotic Heart Disease. Deputy Editor (2018-2021) of the Italian Journal of Interventional Cardiology (GICI ISSN 1824-7008). Review Editor for Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, she is author or co-author of more than 130 articles published in scientific journals indexed by PubMed and of book chapters.
Giuseppe Tarantini graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Parma in 1997 and specialized in Cardiovascular Diseases in 2001, earning a Ph.D. in 2005 from the University of Padua. He completed international fellowships, including in India, focusing on congenital and rheumatic structural heart diseases. In 2005, he became a University Researcher in Padua, and in 2008, he was appointed Scientific Director of Interventional Cardiology Research. Since 2013, he has been an Associate Professor, with over 600 scientific publications and a key role in international multicenter studies.
Since 2016, he has directed the Departmental Unit of Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology at the Padua Hospital, performing advanced procedures such as TAVI and interventions on mitral, pulmonary, and tricuspid valves. He is recognized for utilizing innovative technologies in percutaneous interventional cardiology, including stents and circulatory support systems. He has held significant roles in scientific societies, such as the presidency of GISE in 2017 and membership in ESC and EAPCI working groups.
As an organizer of congresses and a reviewer for prestigious medical journals, he has received accolades such as the "100 Italian Excellence" award and honorary citizenship of Trepuzzi. His contributions have significantly i
