Cough is one of the most common
symptoms in medicine, yet chronic cough remains a challenging but under-recognised
disorder. Long regarded merely as a symptom, it is now increasingly recognised
as a disease in its own right. This ERS Monograph is the first to focus
entirely on chronic cough. It brings together experts in the field to illuminate
the journey from symptom-based to mechanism-based thinking, in order to
highlight the remaining challenges in disease recognition, classification and
management, and to outline strategies for improving patient care, thereby advancing
the field.
Woo-Jung Song is Professor of Medicine in the Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Asan Medical Center (University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea). He leads the Chronic Cough Clinic and Cough Research Laboratory at Asan Medical Center. Loran McGarvey is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Queen’s University of Belfast (Belfast, Northern Ireland) and consultant Respiratory Physician at the Belfast City Hospital. Peter S.P. Cho is a respiratory physician and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at King’s College Hospital (London, UK) and Kings College London. Stuart B. Mazzone is Head of Respiratory Sensory Neuroscience at the University of Melbourne (Victoria, Australia). He is considered a leading authority on the neurobiology of cough and the brain networks governing pulmonary sensory processing. Kian Fan Chung is Professor of Respiratory Medicine and heads the Experimental Medicine Studies Unit at the National Heart and Lung Institute (Imperial College London, London, UK). He is Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS foundation Trust.
