Featuring a diverse selection of critical essays, the volume examines sports as a mirror to societal challenges. Topics include racism in racing and collegiate athletics, gender harassment, LGBTQ discrimination, political controversies, and abuse within sports, urging readers to rethink cultural dynamics beyond the field.
Critical Sports Studies: A Document Reader provides students with a selection of essays that examine social problems in sport. Readers are challenged to critically consider various topics to better understand how the global phenomenon of sport can lead to challenges both on and off the field.
The second edition features new readings on racism and the display of the Confederate flag in NASCAR racing; gendered harassment in sportscasting; LGBTQIA discrimination in sports and coaching; politics in the Olympics; and racism and stereotyping in college sports and on campus. New articles also address Title IX and African American female athletes; athletes with social physique anxiety; muscle dysmorphia and eating disorders; sports hazing in universities and high school; and sexual and physical abuse by teachers, coaches and clergy. The anthology includes an essay from a former NBA player on what Colin Kaepernick started in sports.
Critical Sports Studies is an ideal supplementary or core text for courses in critical sports studies, kinesiology, the sociology of sport, or any course related to the history and culture of sport.
