This book comprehensively reviews the incorporation of different types of carbon-based nanomaterials for application in targeted and controlled drug delivery systems. Carbon-based nanomaterials play a vital role as vectors and scaffolds during drug delivery owing to their ultra-small size, non-toxicity, and high water solubility. The chapters in this book present the use of different carbon-based nanomaterials (such as graphene, carbon quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and carbon nanofibers) into polymeric and polysaccharide-based matrices for the designing of effective drug delivery vehicles which demonstrate superior performance compared to traditional drug delivery systems. In particular, it demonstrates the incorporation of carbon-based nanomaterials into supramolecular drug delivery systems leading to improved drug delivery properties. This book aims to be a reference for researchers and scientists interested in new nanomaterials for drug delivery applications.

Prof. Sarat Kumar Swain is currently working as a professor of Chemistry at Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla, Sambalpur India. He was working as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Polymer Engineering, University of Akron, Akron, OH, USA after receiving his Doctoral degree from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, India. He was also working as a visiting researcher at Indian Association for Cultivation for Science, Kolkata, and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced and Scientific Research, Bangalore, and was awarded INSA SR Fellowship and JNCASR Fellowship respectively. He was the former dean (Academic Affairs), dean (PG Studies and Research) at the University, and head of the Department of Chemistry. His area of research interests includes hybrid nanomaterials, reinforced polymer nanocomposites, and advanced materials like graphene, nano clay, CNT, and CNF for improving gas barriers, fire retardant, and thermal, mechanical, and chemical resistance properties of the materials. He has designed various kinds of nano-structured materials for water treatment, packaging usage, anti-corrosion performance, superconductor properties, sensor behaviors, and biomedical applications. He has more than 200 scientific publications including 120 research papers in different SCI-indexed international journals, 06 books by different publishers including Elsevier, Royal Society of Chemistry, and Springer along with 50 book chapters, and invented two patents to his credit. He has received several awards such as BOYSCAST Fellowship, the DAE-Young Scientist research award, and “Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award” for various academic achievements.
