The aim of this study was to assess transfusion requirements during surgical practices at the Hôpital d'Instruction des Armées OMAR BONGO ONDIMBA (HIA OBO),focusing on blood products issued by the HIA OBO blood bank in the visceral surgery, orthopedic surgery and obstetrics and gynecology departments. This study enabled us to gain a better understanding of the population and profile of patients transfused in surgical settings. Transfusion needs are growing at HIA OBO, encouraged by the introduction of new techniques such as hip replacement. However, much remains to be done to develop a transfusion strategy adapted to current surgical practices.

Doctor Kodjo Tonato HOUNKPATI is an emergency physician and infectiologist, a senior officer in the Togolese Armed Forces, and holds a degree in philosophy from the Université Catholique de l'Afrique de l'Ouest / Abidjan (UCAO-UUA).
