This text presents a series of case histories on various topics in psychiatry. Questions follow each case, together with answers and suggestions for further reading, designed to help the individual through the thinking process that might underlie a clinician's differential diagnosis or management.
A problem-based textbook of psychiatry for the medical student. This book presents the core of information that students have to know. Each chapter contains case histories followed by the development of the case through questions and answers. The chapter also presents a synopsis of aetiology, clinical features, course of illness and treatment. There are boxes for summaries of key points and chapters end with a selection of self-assessment material.This book reflects the move towards a problem-based approach to teaching in medical schools. More responsibility is given to students for their own learning, and this book is geared towards self-directed learning and will prepare the student for examinations. Furthermore it can be used to supplement more traditional texts in schools where the transition to problem-based learning is incomplete. The cases are taken from community, general practice and hospital settings and are geared towards the student who will use psychiatry in the general practice or general hospital physician setting.
