The comprehensive volume deals with the manufacturing processes involved in the following Canadian industries: Aluminum, Beef, Brewing, Brick, Detergents, Flat-Drawn Glass, Asbestos-Magnesia Insulation, Iron and Steel, Magazine Publishing, Petroleum, Pulp and Paper, Rubber, Textiles (Cotton), Textiles (Wool), Textiles (Man-Made Fibres), Tobacco, Wire and Cable. The securing and preliminary preparation of raw materials are given, all stages of processing from receiving materials in the plant to final packaging and shipping outlined, and process charts, photographs, sketches, flow diagrams, and schematic diagrams aiding to understanding of the text are provided.
The material in this book was originally prepared by individuals or staff engaged actively in these Canadian industries, and is, therefore, a co-operative effort on the part of Canadian industry. It has been carefully edited and prepared for press by Mr. Livingston. The volume should prove invaluable to students in courses on engineering and business, to economists, and to all those desiring a concise yet authoritative introduction to these industries so important to the Canadian economy. Librarians will welcome this addition to general information, particularly in regard to the processes not hitherto described in print. KENNETH C. LIVINGSTON is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he received the degrees of B.A.Sc. and M.A.Sc. In Aeronautical Engineering in 1947 and 1948, and the Ph.D. in Psychology in 1957. His college career was interrupted by two years' service with the R.C.A.F. as a navigator. Following graduation, Professor Livingston taught for eleven years at the University of Toronto, first in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, and, after 1950, in the Institute of Business Administration. It was in connection with a course in Manufacturing Processes in the Institute, that the need for the kind of information supplied in the present volume became apparent. Dr. Livingston is at present Director of Technical Services, Northwestern Corrugated Box Company, Minneapolis, Minnesota. THEODORE C. GRAHAM is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he received his B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career in Industrial Engineering at Massey Harris in Toronto, but returned to the University in 1931 to lecture in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. He re-entered the field of industrial engineering with J.D. Woods & Co. in 1937, and became a Director of Woods & Gordon in 1947. When the Institute of Business Administration was organized at the University of Toronto in 1950, Mr. Graham was appointed Professor in Production, and he became Director of the Institute in 1953. For his services during the war, 1941-45, Professor Grahamreceived the M.B.E. He has served on boards of conciliation and arbitration, and participated in management and union training programmes.
