Based on the experience of the pathologists and immunologists involved in the transplant programmes of Papworth and Addenbrooke's Hospitals in Cambridge, this is a detailed account of the immunology and pathology mechanisms affecting the transplantation of organs and their rejection.
This work is based on the experience of the pathologists and immunologists involved in the transplant programmes of Papworth and Addenbrooke's Hospitals in Cambridge. These groups have been at the forefront of the many new advances in transplantation, under the guidance of Professor Roy Calne, and have been instrumental in establishing and setting protocols for the use of the major immunosuppressive agents, including cyclosporin A and FK506. This book presents the experience of the Cambridge group to provide a detailed account of the immunology and pathology mechanisms affecting the transplantation of organs and their rejection. The book is divided into three main parts. Section one gives a general overview of the fundamental principles of the immunology and pathology of transplant surgery. Topics covered include host-cell mediating rejection, cell mediators and the mechanism of rejection. Section two covers immunosuppression, and discusses major and minor histocompatibility antigens, the molecular basis of immunosuppression and immunologic enhancement.
The third section looks at the immunology and pathology of specific organs suitable for transplantation including the liver, heart, heart and lung and pancreas. The final chapters deal with the use of immunosuppressive agents including cyclosporin A, FK506 and monoclonal antibodies. There then follow chapters on infection and tumours in transplant recipients. This book should be useful for all those involved in transplantation programmes, including immunologists, pathologists and transplant surgeons.
