The management of anxiety and insomnia, with undue reliance on the prescribing of anxiolytics and hypnotics, is currently the subject of much public and professional concern. Temazepam in particular has become a major drug of misuse in Scotland, and a recent investigation by the Scottish Affairs Committee into Drug Abuse has drawn attention to the addictive potential of benzodiazepines and other hypnotic and anxiolytic drugs. This report aims to encourage a shift towards the use, where appropriate, of the non-drug management of anxiety and insomnia. It helps doctors to look more critically at benzodiazepine prescribing and provides information and advice on how to continue to reduce levels of prescribing over time.
