ACSM's Body Composition Assessment provides practising fitness, health, and medical professionals with information about various body composition measurement methods in clinical and field settings--evidence-based protocols, advantages, sources of measurement error, and more.
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and body composition experts Timothy Lohman and Laurie Milliken have teamed up to bring you a complete practical guide to performing body composition assessments.
ACSM’s Body Composition Assessment provides you with foundational information and scientific research that can be applied in the fields of medicine, exercise science, nutrition, growth and development and geriatrics.
This comprehensive guide delves into the methodology of a number of techniques. These include DXA, BIA, ultrasound, underwater weighing, ADP, total body water and BMI. The text uncovers the sources of error that are common in each measurement technique.
Researchers and clinicians will benefit from the book’s detailed descriptions of methods for use in both laboratory and field settings. As well as protocols for the standardization of each method and their advantages and limitations.
The text thoroughly examines the health implications of body composition by looking at the relationships between chronic disease and total body fat, fat distribution, muscle mass and bone density. It also gives you the ability to assess changes in a person’s body composition over time.

ACSM was founded in 1954 and is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organisation in the world. With more 50,000 members and certified professionals worldwide, ACSM is dedicated to improving health through science, education and medicine. Timothy Lohman is a professor emeritus at the University of Arizona. His is widely considered to be a leading scientist in the field of body composition assessment. Lohman has also coedited several other publications including Human Body Composition, 2nd Edition (Human Kinetics). His research in body composition helped to establish the chemical immaturity of children using the multicomponent model. Laurie Milliken is an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts. She is an editorial board member of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal. As well as this, Milliken is currently a peer reviewer for other journals including European Journal of Applied Physiology and Journal of Applied Physiology. She has been a member of ACSM since 1994 and has presented her research at many annual meetings.
