He has published widely books on the themes of leadership, personal development and change, and served as editor for the Association for Coaching book series. Harold W. Goldstein is Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Baruch College, the City University of New York, USA.  He is a recognized expert in the management of human capital with over twenty years of independent consulting experience. His research focuses on the development and implementation of staffing systems that result in hiring a talented diverse work force. His research has been published in top journals and books and has received awards for innovation and outstanding applied research contributions to the field.

Elaine D. Pulakos is CEO of PDRI and an internationally recognized contributor to the field of industrial and organizational psychology. In 2010 she received the Distinguished Professional Contributions Award from SIOP, where she has also served as President. She has published numerous articles on performance management, staffing and human resources best practices, and is the author of five books, including Performance Management Transformation: Lessons Learned and Next Steps.

Carla S. Semedo is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Évora, Portugal, where she leads on occupational health psychology. She also works as a consultant in the field of organizational psychology in evaluation and intervention at health services. She is responsible for teaching psychology at undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level, and for coordinating the occupational health psychology research line. She worked for more than 10 years as HR consultant, mainly in recruitment and selection.

Notes on Contributors


Juliet R. Aiken PhD  Juliet is a clinical assistant professor of industrial‐organizational psychology and program director of the master’s in industrial‐organizational psychology at the University of Maryland. Her work focuses on employee selection, diversity in organizations and statistics/measurement. Juliet received her PhD from the University of Maryland in 2011.

Dave Bartram PhD  Dave was chief psychologist for CEB’s Talent Management Labs prior to his retirement in 2016. He is a past‐President of the ITC and Extraordinary Professor in the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Pretoria. He has published widely in the area of Psychological testing in scientific research and in relation to professional issues.

Mark Batey PhD  Mark is senior lecturer in organizational‐psychology and Head of Global Open Programmes at Alliance Manchester Business School at the University of Manchester. He is also academic lead of the Manchester Leadership Programme. His research interests are in creativity, innovation and leadership. He has extensive executive education and consulting experience across industries worldwide, having worked with organizations such as Bank of America, Rolls‐Royce, Sony and Zurich.

Talya N. Bauer PhD  Talya is the Cameron professor of management at Portland State University. She conducts research on relationships at work throughout the employee lifecycle from recruitment to departure. She is a Fellow of SIOP, APA and APS, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology.

Brian L. Bellenger PhD  Brian received his doctoral doctorate in industrial‐organizational psychology from Auburn University, Alabama and currently manages the Employment Testing Department with the Personnel Board of Jefferson County, Birmingham, Alabama. He is also a partner with Centrus Personnel Solutions, LLC. Brian has extensive experience in the field of employee selection, specifically in developing valid, non‐discriminatory selection tools under legal scrutiny.

Melinda Blackman PhD  Melinda is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at California State University, Fullerton. She received her BA in psychology from Stanford University and a PhD in psychology from the University of California, Riverside. She was honoured in 2013 with the Western Psychological Association Outstanding Teaching Award.

James A. Breaugh PhD  James is a professor of management at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. He has conducted research in recruitment, selection, the work–family balance and turnover. His research contributions have resulted in his being voted a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Carla Cabo‐Leitão  Carla is a work and organizational psychologist, currently working as a Talent Management Expert. She has worked in headhunting, recruitment and HR development, and has completed the Management Acceleration programme at Nova School of Business and Economics. Her research interests include decent work, contributive uniqueness, cooperation and organizational recognition.

Anthony W. Caputo  Anthony is a Consultant at Mercer/Sirota, where he made many contributions to the firm’s Research and Development efforts. He holds a MA in social‐organizational psychology from Teachers College at Columbia University and a BA from Seton Hall University, where he serves as an adjunct professor of industrial‐organizational psychology.

Jeanette N. Cleveland PhD  Jeanette is a full professor in industrial‐organizational psychology at Colorado State University. Her research focuses on age and gender diversity and work–life outcomes. Her interests are in how context factors can mitigate the negative effects of stereotyping and bias and enhance work productivity and well‐being.

Stephen M. Colarelli PhD  Stephen is professor of psychology at Central Michigan University. His research focuses on the intersection between evolutionary and organizational psychology. His most recent book (with Richard Arvey) is The Biological Foundations of Organizational Behavior.

Jan Corstjens  Jan is a PhD candidate at the Department of Personnel Management and Work and Organizational Psychology, Ghent University. He obtained his BA in cognitive psychology in 2011 and an MA in work and organizational psychology in 2012 from Maastricht University, The Netherlands. His research interests are in the field of selection and assessment.

Michael M. DeNunzio  Michael is a doctoral student in industrial‐organizational psychology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. His research focuses on work engagement, motivation and personnel selection. His research has been published in the Encyclopedia of Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the Encyclopedia of the History of Psychological Theories.

Marcus W. Dickson PhD  Marcus is a professor of industrial‐organizational psychology at Wayne State University, Detroit. His research focuses on leadership, especially cross‐cultural leadership, and he served as co‐principal investigator on Project GLOBE. His work has been published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, Advances in Global Leadership and AP:AIR, among others.

Nuno Rebelo dos Santos PhD  Nuno Rebelo is a professor of work and organizational psychology at the University of Evora, Portugal. His work involves teaching PhD and MA courses, as well as executive training and development, areas where he has long experience. His research interests include ethics, leadership, cooperation, coaching in organizations and decent work.

Geeta D’Souza PhD  Geeta is an assistant professor in Human Resources & Behavioral Sciences at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, India. She received her PhD from Central Michigan University. Her research interests include virtual teams, selection and conflict.

Mark G. Ehrhart PhD  Mark is a professor in the Department of Psychology at San Diego State University. His current research interests include organizational climate and culture, organizational citizenship behaviour, leadership and work stress, and the application of these fields across levels of analysis, and in service and health and mental health settings.

Michael Fetzer PhD  Michael was awarded a PhD in industrial‐organizational psychology, and has since gained 15 years’ experience in developing and implementing talent measurement and talent management products and services. As Vice President and Managing Principal at CultureFactors, he designs and executes client engagements, focusing on organizational culture and leadership.

Jacob W. Forsman  Jacob is a senior associate at KPMG. He has experience in employee and leadership development techniques, selection and assessment methodologies, psychometric analyses, competence modelling, career paths and training evaluations. He completed his MA in industrial‐organizational psychology at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Adrian Furnham PhD  Adrian studied at the London School of Economics, where he obtained a distinction in an MSc Econ, and at Oxford University where he completed a DPhil in 1981. He subsequently earned a DSc in 1991 and DLitt in 1995. Formerly a lecturer in psychology at Pembroke College, Oxford, he has been professor of psychology at University College London since 1992.

Alexa M. Garcia  Alexa is a doctoral candidate studying industrial‐organizational psychology at Portland State University. Her research spans a variety of topics, including applicant perceptions of the hiring process, diversity in the workplace, workplace aggression prevention and occupational health and safety.

Jennifer L. Geimer PhD  Jennifer is a managing research scientist at CEB. In this role she leads the development of innovative multimedia simulations. Prior to joining CEB, Jennifer directed job analyses and assessment centres and developed rich‐media virtual role‐play simulations. She earned her PhD in industrial‐organizational psychology at Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

Angela R. Grotto PhD  Angela is the Gabriel Hauge Assistant Professor of Management at Manhattan College. She received her doctorate in industrial‐organizational psychology from Baruch College & The Graduate Center, CUNY. Angela’s research focuses on employee work‐life management. She has published in the American Sociological Review, Gender in Management, and Journal of Vocational Behavior.

Stanley M. Gully PhD  Stanley is a professor of human resource management in the School of Labor and Employment Relations, Pennsylvania State University and a Fellow of SIOP. He has served on the editorial boards of leading journals. His research has been published in top outlets and his research interests focus on recruitment, leadership and team effectiveness, motivation, training and learning.
