The updated and revised second edition of this surgical pathology reference offers advice from over 70 experienced contributors on the diagnostic evaluation of every type of specimen from every anatomical site. New chapters feature the eye, the ear, the penis and non-neoplastic bone diseases.
This leading surgical pathology reference has been updated and revised to incorporate advances and to guide the practicing surgical pathologist in meeting new diagnostic challenges. Dr Sternberg and his associate editors have brought together more than 70 pre-eminent surgical pathologists to offer expert, practical advice on the diagnostic evaluation of every type of specimen from every anatomic site. The authors discuss each diagnostic problem as they would in a face-to-face consultation, taking the reader step-by-step through the reasoning involved in differential evaluation of each specimen. They also provide references. The Second Edition domenstrates the wide-ranging diagnostic applications of immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques such as flow cytometry, in situ hybridization (ISH), and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Four new chapters - the eye, the ear, the penis and nonneoplastic bone diseases - have been added to the Second Edition and most chapters from the original edition have been extensively rewritten.
The updated coverage includes detailed information on neoplasms and other disease entities that have recently been identified by surgical pathologists, as well as on new infectious diseases, conditions associated with AIDS, effects of hormone therapy and cancer therapy and the biopsy diagnosis of organ transplant rejection. Coverage of many important entities described in the original edition has been greatly expanded for the Second Edition. The contributors present improved approaches to common differential diagnostic problems and where approaches to common differential diagnostic problems and, where appropriate, discuss new classification and staging systems.
