This video has been developed to help physiotherapists improve their knowledge of airway clearance in surgical and medical patients. It uses real patients in real situations, filmed at the Royal Brompton Hospital and in a patient's home and covers the use of the techniques on children as young as four through to older adults. The active cycle of breathing techniques (ACBT) uses breathing control, thoracic expansion exercises and the forced expiration technique, to mobilise and clear excess bronchial excretions in both medical and surgical patients. The ACBT can be introduced as "huffing" games from the age of about two years and for those who need airway clearance treatment in the long term, the techniques can be carried out independently. The techniques should never be uncomfortable and can be used in any position according to the requirements of the individual.
