The idea for this text, which adopts a case-study approach to aid the interpretation of cardiotachographs, arose in 1986 as a result of a course for midwives entitled "Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice". It should enable midwives to understand and interpret CTG effectively.
Cardiotography (CTG) is the most convenient and well-tried method of monitoring fetal heart rate available to midwives and obstetricians. The ultimately fatal effects of hypoxia on the fetus can be guaged in several ways - by measuring blood pH value, by measuring the level of oxygen saturation of the blood, and most conveniently, by measuring the heart rate using CTG. If carefully monitored, death can be prevented. The purpose of this book is to enable midwives to understand and interpret the CTG as effectively as possible. The case study approach it adopts resulted from the 1986 "Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice" course of midwives.
